Mastic Beach, NY - Mastic Beach Fire Department was toned out on April 18th for reports of a structure fire at "Smitty's True Value," a hardware store located at 211 Mastic Beach Road, that has been vacant for well over 10 years. A chief from Mastic FD arrived on the scene and found that he had a fully-involved lumber warehouse.
Mastic Beach command radioed back to Firecom and requested a re-tone for a Working Fire and also requested additional an engine and tower ladder from Mastic F.D. and Brookhaven F.D. After sizing up the fire, Mastic Beach command requested more engines and tankers to the scene. SCPD closed several roads down and Mastic Beach F.D. command requested fire police to help with traffic control.
Two tower ladders, multiple hand-lines and a deck gun were used to fight the fire, which took about three hours to bring under control. Heavy equipment was brought in to find any hot spots due to the building collapsing.
There were no known injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
